James, a cigar maker by trade, was not married.

He enlisted in Company "D", 19th U.S. Infantry at Patterson, New Jersey on 18 May 1899 and thereafter saw service in the Philippines. He was discharged at Angel Island, California on 19 June 1902, at the expiration of his term of enlistment. He was described at enlistment as 5'5" tall, with brown hair and eyes.

His grave in his father's plot is unmarked.
