Peter was born in Oberweischenbach, Germany, the son of Johann Peter Schaefer and Anna Maria Lay. Peter emigrated to America and settled in McHenry County Illinois around 1842. He remained a resident of the county for the next 50 years, till his death in 1892.

Peter married Barbara Schmitt, daughter of Joseph Schmitt and Anna Pung, on 8 June 1845 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

They had nine children during their marriage, Maria Anna, Peter, Mathias J, Joseph P, Elizabeth Mary, Catharina, Anna Catharina, Helena Magdalena and Catharina Margretha. They also raised together, Barbara's young son, Frank Schmitt, from her first marriage.
