Opal Mae Duncan was the eldest child of William Riley Duncan and Sophronia A. "Kate" Stevenson. Her parents were both deceased by 1903, leaving five orphaned children. At the tender age of sixteen, Opal became parent to her four younger siblings. Later, when her sister Myrtle died in 1918, Opal relocated to Cumberland, WI and helped her brother-in-law, B. Lee Ward, raise his son, Byron G. Ward. Opal was listed in the 1910 and 1920 census returns as a school teacher; in the 1930 census, she worked as a restaurant cook. Though she had no children of her own, Opal had raised her 2 sisters, 2 brothers, and a nephew.

May God bless Opal for her selfless devotion to family.
