William Riley "Bill" Duncan was a son of Francis Marion Duncan and Martha J. Yoakum. Bill married Sophronia A. "Kate" Stevenson on 20 Dec 1885 in Sangamon Co., IL. They had five children: Opal M., Myrtle L., Leroy Springer, Addie Jane, and Fred.

In the early 1890s, the family moved to southwestern Missouri and resided in Joplin, Carterville, and Webb City. At the time his wife Kate died in 1900, Bill's sister Mary Jane Duncan was living with the family to assist in raising the children. Mary Jane died the following year in 1901. Bill Duncan worked at a foundry in Webb City, MO. When Bill died his five children were orphaned and returned to Sangamon Co., IL to live with relatives.
