Sophronia A. "Kate" Stevenson Duncan was a daughter of James M. Stevenson and Martha Ann Loving. Kate was crippled and used a crutch most of her life. She married William Riley "Bill" Duncan on 20 Dec 1885 in Sangamon Co., IL. They had five children: Opal M., Myrtle L., Leroy Springer, Addie Jane, and Fred.

DUNCAN - Died, Saturday, March 17, 1900, at her home in Carterville, MO, Mrs. Sophronia Kate A. Duncan, aged 38 years, 5 months and 20 days. Mrs. Duncan was well and favorably known in the vicinity of Springfield and for many years resided at Salisbury. She is survived by her parents Mr. and Mrs. James M. Stevenson, and one sister, Mrs. O. D. Irwin of Salisbury, and two sons and three daughters. The remains were brought to Salisbury, where the funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the residence at 2 o'clock. The Rev. T. D. Duncan officiated. The remains were interred in the Salisbury Cemetery. (THE JOURNAL, Springfield, IL; Wednesday morning, March 21, 1900, page 6).

Bill Duncan died three years later in 1903, leaving their five children orphaned.
