Mary spent her childhood in Wilkes Barre and then Coaldale. From Pennsylvania, the family moved to Detroit, MI so her brothers wouldn't have to work in the mines. It was from Detroit that she joined the Women's Army Corps. (WAC) in 1942. After basic training in Florida, she was assigned to Mitchell Field, near New York City, to study cryptography. She completed her cryptographic training with honors and was sent overseas, traveling to England on the Queen Mary, which was serving as a troop ship. Mary was assigned to the 1st Division 8th Air Force, where she spent the duration of WWII.
Mary returned to Detroit and found work as a secretary with the United Steelworkers of America, remaining there until her retirement. In 1977, she made a change, moving to Long Beach, CA.
Mary loved to travel, visiting exotic locales like Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. She spent several vacations in Jamaica, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Tenerife, Canary Islands. In 1954 Mary was granted an audience with Pope Pius XI in Rome. She felt that this was the most rewarding experience of all her travels.
For over ten years, Mary volunteered with various organizations in Long Beach, including the Senior Center and the Veterans' Hospital, as well as ushering at the Community Playhouse.
Mary's funeral service will be Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 11 am at Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
