Retired post office manager, 73
James L. Burney grew up on his family's Ottawa, Kan., farm with hopes of becoming a teacher of physical education and math - subject he later pursued at two Midwestern universities.
But after enlisting in the Navy during World War II, he discovered a new interest that would lead to a 37-year career: postal work.
Mr. Burney, who serviced nine years as manager of the Grantville Post Office, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital after a long illness. He was 73.
Mr. Burney served three years in the Navy as a postal specialist after attending Ottawa University in his native Kansas and the University of Dubuque in Iowa. His last duty station was in San Diego, where he lived for 48 years.
He was founding member of the Knights of Columbus chapter at Blessed Sacrament Catholic church near his College Area home.
Mr. Burney was active in his church as a Eucharistic minister, men and women who helped distribute the consecrated bread and wine to the congregation.
He was also entertainment chairman of the Serra Club of San Diego, was active in the San Diego Blood Bank and belonged to the Pacific Beach Lions Club.
Mr. Burney is survived by his wife, Frances, and a daughter, Jeanette Burney, of San Diego.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. today at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, followed by burial at Holy Cross Cemetery.
