09-14-1950. Former Louisa Merchant Dies in Charleston. Lafayette (Lafe) E. Cooksey, 68, former
businessman of Louisa, died at his home in Charleston, W. Va. on September 6th following an illness
of two years.
Mr. Cooksey was the owner of LE Cooksey's Department Store in Louisa for 20 years. The
establishment was located on Main Cross Street where the Modern Auto Supply is now located. Mr.
Cooksey was active both as a citizen and a business man while residing in Louisa. Mr. Cooksey was
a member of Epperson Masonic Lodge No 195 and belonged to United Methodist Church.
He moved to Charleston, W. Va. eight years ago and entered the mercantile business in
Racine, W. Va. before his retirement three years ago. Funeral services were held at the Louisa
Methodist Church on Friday September 8 at 2 p.m. with the Rev Charles Perry officiating. Burial was
in the Pine Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were held by Outright Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Claude E Fyffe, John W Page, WS Boggs, William Patton, EdLand,
and Jas N Hughes.
Mr Cooksey is survived by his widow, Dora Jordan Cooksey, to whom he had been marriage
39 years. Other survivors include five daughters, Mrs Harry Baily, Dayton, Ohio, Mrs EE Tamplin,
Racine, W Va., Mrs WW Hunter, Huntington, Mrs CLyde CHilders, Charleston, and Miss Stella
Cooksey of Charleston; one son "Lafe" Cooksey of Columbus, Ohio; one sister Mrs JR Compton of Buchanan, and one brother BH Cooksey of Prichard, W VA and five grandchildren.
