Rev. Martin Luther Baum (M.L. Baum) was born Nov. 27, 1857 in Saint Paul, Pickaway County, Ohio, the son of Lewis and Elizabeth Catherine (Roof) Baum. He died at age 67 on June 23, 1925, several days after suffering a stroke in Dayton. He is buried in Woodland Cemetery, as is his wife. He retired at age 65 on April 8, 1923 on the church's 40th anniversary after serving at Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church from its founding (organized April 8, 1883). He was never quite so well since suffering from influenza in 1918. Rev. Baum confirmed 720 persons and received into the church 1130 persons. He united in marriage 522 couples and officiated at 520 burials. He married Nannie Elizabeth Shook of Port Clinton, Ottawa County, Ohio on April 12, 1887 in Ottawa County, Ohio. They had one daughter, Vera Irene (Baum) Tosca (1890-1983). Rev. Baum was one of seven siblings, with four brothers and two sisters.
