The Stephen Merritt Burial and Cremation Company, 241-243 W. 23rd Street near 8th Avenue, New York City, New York USA, opened in 1897 in this 6-story building. The Merritt name in the funeral business dates back to 1845 to Stephen W. Merritt, Sr., as part of his sexton duties at the 18th Street Methodist Church, and continued by his son, the Rev. Stephen W. Merritt, Jr. (1833-1917) who is pictured above standing in front of his hearse wearing his tall black silk top hat. Rev. Merritt handled the funeral of Gen. U.S. Grant in 1885. His son, Lt. Stephen Merritt III, was an undertaker with his father for short time before he died at the age of 34 of typhoid fever, then his son, Stephen W. Merritt IV operated the firm until he died in 1945.
