On the 26 Apr 1910 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma census, I found JOSEPH R Strain, 32, Arkansas born; wife of 12 years, Mary Strain, 33, Texas, had 5 kids, 4 living; sons or daughters: Joseph R Strain, 11, OK; last 3 born in Mexico: Eloise Strain, 9; Adele Strain, 5 and Elmer Strain, 2. They resided at 1714 E 9th Street.
12 Sep 1918, Joseph Rilley Strain, Jr., born 5 Dec 1898, was a typist for the War Trade Board in Laredo, Texas. He resided with his wife at 1302 Scott Street in Laredo, Texas. He was short, medium build with light brown eyes and brown hair. World War I Draft Registration Card (see photo).
On the 1920 Laredo Ward 3, Webb Co., Texas census, I found "widow" (sic) and public school teacher, Mrs Mary Strain, 42, Texas born; sons or daughters: Joseph R Strain, 21, Oklahoma; Eloise M. Strain, 19, Mexico; Adele Strain, 14, Mexico and Elmer Strain, 11, Mexico born. The last 3 immigrated here in 1911, as American citizens, all 3 speaking Spanish. Mary's father was Welsh and mother was Irish.
On the 1930 Twp. 18, Fresno Co., California census, I found hydro electric operator, Joseph R Strain, 29, single, Oklahoma born, his father was born in Arkansas; residing with his widowed mother, Mary L Strain, 52, Texas born.
"J. R. STRAIN. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in People's Funeral Chapel for Joseph R. Strain of Kernville who died Sunday. He was 65. Mr. Strain, a native of Oklahoma, had lived in Kernville for the past 13 years. He had been employed by Southern California Edison Co. until his retirement in December. He is survived by his widow, Marjorie, and a son , Joseph R. Strain, Jr., both of Kernville; a brother, Elmer Strain of Hanford, and two sisters, Mrs. D. L. Perrin of San Antonio, Tex., and Mrs. Adele Shore of Modesto. Interment will be in Grangeville Cemetery." Per the The Hanford Sentinel, dated 9 March 1964, page 2 (see photo).
