Mildred J. Asbjornson was born on November 17, 1907, in Limestone Township of Lincoln County to Walter and Oline (Bang)Asbjornson. She was Baptized and Confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran (Icelandic) Church. She graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1925 and attended the University of Minnesota. She moved to Washington D.C. and beginning in 1932, Mildred worked as the personal secretary to eight consecutive United States Secretaries of State. Those with whom she served are Cordell Hull, E.R. Stettinius, James Byrnes, Gen. Geo. C. Marshall, Dean Acheson, John F. Dulles, Christian A. Herter and Dean Rusk. She retired from U.S. government service in 1969 and returned to live her retirement years in Ivanhoe. She was a member of the Bethany Elim Lutheran Church in Ivanhoe.
