Born in Lumpkin County, where he lived all his life, he was the son of the late James Wesley and Sarah Ravan Hester. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Amanda Hester Gerrells and Maude Hester and brother, Gomer Hester.

Survivors include his sisters, Zora Robinson and Mattie Eaton, both of Dahlonega; and brother, Billy Hester, Dahlonega
