Mary Frances Riley

Mary Frances Riley, 86, of Mt. Pleasant died at 12:41 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at Weir Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Weir Funeral Home with family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Memorials have been established to Pleasant Manor Care Center.

Mrs. Riley was born December 23, 1913, in Burlington, the daughter of Reason and Icie L. Switzer Messer. She married John W. Riley on March 12, 1935, in Monmouth, Ill. She graduated from Lockridge High School in 1931 and was a homemaker. She helped her husband with the Speed Queen sales and repair dealership in Mt. Pleasant for over nine years.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant, several church circles, and TOPS for 40 years. She enjoyed making quilts and cookies for Old Threshers.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ellen Ruschill of Mt. Pleasant; one son, John J. Riley of rural Mt. Pleasant; nine grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, her stepfather, George Switzer, one son, Kenneth W. Riley; two sisters, Lola Overrocker and Muriel Hall; two half-sisters, Lucille and Lueta White; three brothers, Esco, Creston and Eustice Messer; and one half-brother, Ralph Switze.
