Christopher lived in Montezuma, Jasper County, Iowa. He enlisted at age 19 in Company "C", 28th Iowa Infantry on 28 August 1862, and was mustered 22 September. He was promoted 8th Corporal on 25 February 1863. After being discharged for disability at Helena, Arkansas on 24 April 1863, he re-entered the service and mustered 4 January 1864.

He was killed in action at the Battle of Cedar Creek, Virginia.
