The Youngstown Vindicator Memorial Obituary:

WARREN – Edwin B. Baker, 88, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, after a valiant battle with cancer.

He was born April 7, 1923, to Edwin J. and Nellie (Pearce) Baker.

Mr. Baker spent his youth in Mineral Ridge and graduated from Mineral Ridge High School in 1941. He worked tirelessly from an early age to help support his family during difficult times. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned the rank of Gunner's Mate First Class, heading up the operations on a Liberty ship during World War II. This involvement caused irreparable nerve damage affecting his hearing.

After the war, he married Ann Riffle Baker, the love of his life, on July 19, 1946, and celebrated 64 years of marriage on July 19, 2010, at a family party in a loge at Progressive Field.

After working for Can Do Company and others and learning all he could from his jobs, even becoming a journeyman carpenter in less than a year, he launched E.B. Baker and Sons General Contractors. He became known for excellent workmanship, service, kindness and humor, ethical practices, and value to his customers-qualities passed down to the next generations.

Ed loved times spent with family and friends, especially when combined with travel aboard cruise ships. He and Ann enjoyed 22 cruises over the years. Ed belonged to the Howland United Methodist Church and to the Buckeye Club of Warren.

Edwin was preceded in death by his devoted wife just nine months ago, on April 19, 2011; his parents; and sisters Lois Turner (Mrs. George) and Nellie Belle Mrofchak (Mrs. Joseph).

Those remaining to cherish his memory, include sons Roger E. Baker, M.D. (Jan) of Canton, Randall P. Baker (Suzanne) of Lake Milton and Charles D. Baker (Sue) of Howland; grandchildren Molly Meister (Frank) of North Canton, Brad Baker of Cuyahoga Falls, Alexander Baker (April) of Florham, N.J., Matthew Baker (Tina) of Cuyahoga Falls, Libbey Baumgarten (Adam) of New York, Kristen Gebhardt (Douglas) of Howland, Deanna Andamasaris (William) of Howland and Julie Lintz (Wade) of Austin, Texas; great-grandchildren Samuel and Caroline Meister, Keira Baker, Brady, Blake and Beau Baker, Hayley Magrell, Isabella, Lauren and John Baker, Elliot and Avery Gebhardt, Sydney and Ryley Andamasaris, and Wyatt Lintz; sisters Jane Lindsey (Mrs. Robert) and Jean Baker; brother Ronald Baker (Kitty); and many cousins, nieces, nephews, dear friends and business associates.

The family will be present to receive friends at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, today, Feb. 14, 2012, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Services will be held on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Howland United Methodist Church, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Matthew Darrin will officiate.

Interment will follow at Howland Township Cemetery with full military honors.
