Edward G. Gerdes was a genealogist and amateur historian. He was the founder of the Original Arkansas Civil War Webpage and helped thousands of individuals find their ancestors. Due to him, Arkansas was the first major Civil War state with all of its Civil War rosters available online. He was awarded the 2001 General Joseph O. Shelby Award for best Civil War website by the Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. In 2004 he received the S.A. Cunningham Award for Literary Achievement for his body of Civil War work from the same organization. He entered almost 2,000 graves on Find-A-Grave under the userid 'Edward'. He could always be found with a helpful attitude and a smile at the Craighead County Public Library microfiche #1. It was his firm belief that all genealogical information should be available for free on the internet.

Edward G. Gerdes joined the US Coast Guard in 1945 and served aboard the USCGC Eugene and USCGC Spencer on duty in the Arctic Circle. He served in the Arkansas Army National Guard in a full-time position for 20 years until disabled.

Edward is sorely missed by his family and by the thousands of people he helped reunite with their ancestors.
