Josephine Frances (Pyrkos) VanNatta (1924-2012)


DENISON - Josephine Frances Pyrkos VanNatta, born Zofia Pyrkos on June 17, 1924 took the hand of Jesus as he led her to eternal life on Sunday, February 12, 2012. Jo died peacefully at her home in Denison, Texas where she had lived most recently with her dear friend and caregiver Tammie Phillips.

Jo was born in Depew, N.Y. to Leonard Pyrkosz and Ida Sirkrecki. She attended school in Machias, New York and spent most of her childhood years in Machias and Olean, New York. At the age of 16, Jo quit school so she could work. She ventured out when she was eighteen to see the world, and while on a train to Wilmington, Ohio she met Judy Collins, a friend for life. Jo took a job in a café in Wilmington, where she met Marvin VanNatta, a young farm boy from Clarksville, Ohio. Six weeks later they were wed and built a life together that lasted 63 years. During that time they lived in the states of New York and Pennsylvania for many years, and moved from Smethport, Pa. to Lubbock in 1969. Marvin and Jo lived in Shallowater for 30 years, and then moved to Pottsboro in 2004 to be near their daughter.

Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, as well as by her parents and her siblings, Emily, John, Mary and Rosie.

Surviving are their four children, Jerry VanNatta (Martiee) of Brownsburg, Ind.; Rick VanNatta (Pam) of Denison; Tina Dodson (Skee) of Pottsboro, and Ray VanNatta (Julie) of Gypsum, Colo. Also surviving are their twelve grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Jo was extremely proud of her family.

Rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. and visitation will follow at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Bratcher Funeral Home in Denison, and funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bratcher, with burial at Cedarlawn Memorial Park, 5805 Texoma Parkway, Sherman. Pallbearers will be sons Jerry, Rick and Ray VanNatta, son-in-law Skee Dodson, and grandsons Joshua and Tony VanNatta.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Marvin and Josephine VanNatta Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Grayson County College Foundation, 6101 Grayson Drive, Denison, TX 75020 or to Guardian Hospice, 320 N. Travis, Sherman, TX 75090.
