World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Cambusnethan, Scotland, he served as a Private in the 16th Infantry Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. On April 9, 1917, during an advance on a German defensive position at Vimy Ridge, northwestern France, Private Milne's company was checked by machine gun fire. Crawling on his hands and knees, Private Milne succeeded in reaching the gun, killing the crew with bombs and capturing the gun. He again located another machine gun, killing the crew and capturing the gun. He was killed a short time later and his body was never recovered. For his bravery which saved the lives of many of his comrades, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on June 8, 1917.
