Also reportedly born in Virginia, he definitely was the son of Michael & Rebecca Carbaugh. He married Rebecca Adams September 1858, but she died in August 1859. In 1860, he was a carpenter living in Pinetown, Fairview Township, York County, and stood 5' 8" tall with brown hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Carlisle July 25, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 15 as a private with Co. G, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He claimed that he suffered a shell wound in the right thigh and knee at the battle of Antietam September 17, 1862. While army records provide no evidence of the injury, his body had the scars to prove it. After Antietam he was assigned as hospital cook and was honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
