Samuel T. Benninger, 94, of 421 Chase Street, died at 4;15 a.m. on Friday at the Kaul Memorial Extended Care Center in St. Marys. He was born Oct. 9, 1883 in Venango County, son of the late Marcus and Alice Moorehead Benninger. Mr. Benninger had resided in Kane for the past 30 years with prior residence in Lamont. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kane. On Nov. 1, 1948, Mr. Benninger retired from active duty with the United National Fuel Gas Company and placed on the company annuity roll following more than 43 years of continuous service with United Natural. His name was listed under the heading of "Faithful Service Milestone" in the 1947 annual statement of National Fuel Gas Company of which United Natural Gas Company is a subsidiary. Mr. Benninger's name was included among the names of 18 employes who had continuous service records of 40 years or more. Mr. Benninger began his long term of service with United Natural Gas in June of 1905 as a laborer at Van Station, Venango County. Subsequently he was employed at several other of the company's compressor stations, Pine Grove and Mineral in Venango County, Henry in Potter County and nearby Lamont Station. In September of 1909, Mr. Benninger was transferred to the gas company's production department with headquarters in Lamont. On October of 1936, he was promoted to the post of supervisor in the Kane field which position he held at the time of his retirement. On March 18, 1905 he married Altha Alden, who died Feb 21, 1969. Mr. Benninger was also preceded in death by three sisters and seven brothers. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. LaRue (Evelyn) Finnefrock, Mrs. Alice McCarthy, Mrs. Russell (Dorothy) Williams and Mrs. Helen Stroup, all of Kane and Mrs. Nellie Fitzgerald and Mrs. Gordon (Grace) Zerbe, both of Bradford; one son, Russell Benninger of Kane; one sister, Mrs. Ralph (Hettie) Clark of Oil City; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to call at the Cummings Funeral Home after 7 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday. The Rev. Howard C. Patterson will officiate at the funeral service at the funeral home on Monday at1:30 p.m. Interment will following Forest Lawn Cemetery.
