Freeman was a stone mason and plasterer both before and after the Civil War.

Freeman was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted with the 58th Regiment PA Infantry, Company B on March 7, 1862 as a Private. Freeman was promoted to Corporal on Jan 7, 1863 and was discharged on a surgeon's certificate on June 22, 1863.
