George N. Marinovich passed away peacefully on Feb. 9, 2012, at the age of 84.

He was born on May 5, 1927, in Ventura and lived in his hometown most of his life. As a young man 17 years of age, George joined the US Navy in 1944 and served honorably until 1946. After being discharged from the U.S. Navy he went back to Ventura High School to complete the requirements to receive his diploma.

After attending and graduating from Ventura County Community College, George started his career as a firefighter at the Fire Division of the U.S. Naval Station, Port Hueneme. On Oct. 1, 1951, he resigned to accept a position of firefighter for the City of San Buenaventura. He retired in 1981 from the city as Fire Captain.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Uta; two sons from his previous marriage, Nick and Dan Marinovich; his sister, Ann Adamson; and nephew, Glenn Adamson. George was a wonderful husband and father. His stepchildren, Karl Tomaschow, Alfred Tomaschow (Jennifer), Mary Ann Downard (Ron) and David Tomaschow (Wendy), loved, admired and respected him very much. George (Jedo) was a very loving, kind and generous grandfather and will be missed very much by his grandchildren, Aaron, Michael, Samuel, Elizabeth, Ryan, Nathaniel, Tyler, Julia, Christopher, Chandler and his adopted grandchildren, Ena Volic-Hawkes (Robert) and Tijana Van Buren (Tyler). He was loved by daughter-in-law, Sherri Marinovich; cousins, Halid and Mira Volic, Ajlan and Neda Nargilic; and numerous relatives and friends in the U.S. and Germany, where he and Uta traveled frequently between to be with family and friends.

An avid football fan, he was especially rooting for the 49ers whenever they played.
