William Havens Rice (Bill, Billy or Bo) lived a full life for all of his 86 years, passing in the dawn hours on Feb. 10, 2012, in his rural Paso Robles home with his loving wife of 26 years, Sharon, by his side.

Bill was born in McAlester, Okla., on Feb. 27, 1926. An only child of Chloe and Frank, he excelled in school loving his history lessons most. Bill joined the Navy in the early stages of WWII and was always proud to be a veteran. Bill always considered his word and handshake a bond never to be broken. He was generous to a fault always offering a helping hand whenever needed. He recently received his 50-Year Service Emblem from the Masonic Lodge and always considered his membership in the organization an honor.

Bill could do anything he set his mind to from being a stuntman in early Hollywood cowboy films to overseeing large housing developments. He owned his own concrete pumping business, was a driller in the Ventura oil fields, trained animals for Hollywood, including Lassie, and raised thoroughbreds for racing. Bill had a great love for all animals and was known for his keen eye in recognizing quality horses - he was considered an authentic horseman and cowboy by all who knew him.

A longtime resident of Ojai, Bill will be greatly missed by his countless friends, family and extended family. Bill raised many children, the oldest being Michael who today would be 64 but who predeceased his father in 1969, followed by Libby, Debbie, David, Marty, Matt, Rick and Travis, the youngest at 33, a Captain for CDF. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren.

Per Bill's wishes, his ashes will be placed under his favorite oak tree at his home in Paso Robles.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held at his Paso Robles home on Saturday, Feb. 25. Please send notes, stories, pictures and tales of Bill's life (for everyone to share) to: Bill's Celebration, 705 East Grand Avenue, Arroyo Grande, CA 93420, or email to: [email protected].
