Tom was born to Elbert "Al" Hivner and Priscilla Hivner on Sept. 18, 1946, in Oxnard. Tom attended schools in Oxnard, including Oxnard Union High School. While in Oxnard High Tom was a trumpeter in the high school band and was privileged to march in the Rose Parade.
As a teenager Tom built his own dragster and participated in Drag races. He enjoyed auto races of all kinds. Another favorite activity was attending the Reno Air Races whenever possible. After high school Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army. He served about two years in Germany, followed by 11 months in Viet Nam. He served as a helicopter mechanic with the rank of SP4.
Following his military service Tom returned to Oxnard and worked mainly as a welder and mechanic. He was also involved in painting and sandblasting. He fell in love with flying after his Uncle Harold took him for a spin. Tom loved the Pilot's Prayer which speaks of "touching the face of God" while flying. Tom took flying lessons and experienced that emotion many times but was unable to fulfill his dream of obtaining a pilot's license for health reasons.
Tom is survived by his mother, Priscilla Hartveld Hivner; sons, Daniel L. Hivner, Matthew Hivner; stepdaughter, Pamela Beth Rosenthal; and grandchildren, Daniel T. Hivner and Makayla Hivner. Also surviving are his aunt, Ida C. Kyle, and several cousins and dear friends.
