Robert L. Stewart was the son of Charles Stewart and Leah Hutchinson of Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. He married Cornelia A. Smith on 30 Oct 1851 at Saint John Episcopal Church in Johnstown. Robert and Cornelia had two children, who both died in Kalamazoo, Michigan:

- Lucius J. Stewart (married Jennie McLane)
Robert died 6 Apr 1876 in Johnstown and was buried at the side of his wife Cornelia, who died 25 May 1871, in Johnstown Cemetery.
