William Leroy Barnhill, son of John James and Lucinda Belle (Queen) Barnhill, was born May 7, 1899 at Tryon, OK. His death occurred on Oct. 26, 1987 in Russell City Hospital, at the age of 88 years, 5 months, 19 days.

William came to Kansas with his family when he was 11 years of age, and lived most of his life in Kansas. After his basic education, he graduated from Pittsburg State University with a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. He was united in marriage to Thelma Marie Tanner on Jan. 27, 1934 at Augusta, KS and this union was blessed with three children: William Donald, David Leroy, and Doris Marie.

He taught school for 36½ years, beginning in a log cabin rural school in Wyoming. He later taught in junior college, was principal and superintendent for various schools, and taught in a number of local area schools, including Bunker Hill, Cuba, and Kirwin, KS where he retired in 1965 and moved to Russell to make his home. After his retirement from teaching, he spent a great deal of time in the Methodist Church Ministry. He enjoyed writing editorials for the area daily newspapers and was very interested in political activities, local, state and national. He was an avid gardener and shared the porduce with his friends and neighbors. Growing Amaryllis flowers was a hobby and he was quite good at it. He never lost his zest for education and was a lifelong advocate of the educational process.

He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Russell, the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, both of Russell and had been a member of the Consistory and Shrine. He received a 50 year membership pin in the Masonic Lodge and a life member of the National Educational Assoc. and KS State Teacher's Assoc.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and four sisters. Survivors are his wife, Thelma of the home in Russell; children: Donald of K.C., OK; David of Minneapolis, MN; and Doris Marie Neilol of Billings, MT; and 7 grandchildren. Other survivors are brother Merle Barnhill, of Ellensburg, WA and two sisters: Orbar Campbell and Thelma Brantley, both of Winfield, KS.
