Age 81 of 185 Oriole Drive Horseheads, NY passed away on Tuesday March 20, 2007 at St. Joseph's Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Mary Jane was born February 18, 1926 in Endicott, NY the daughter of the late Elias and Catherine Sutton Powell. She was a graduate of Union Endicott High School Class of 1943. Mary Jane was a proud graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1947. She married her husband, Albert C. Abbott, on July 10, 1948 and he predeceased her on July 5, 1993. Mrs. Abbott was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads and a member of The Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, The Horseheads Historical Society, and The Euchre Club. Mrs. Abbott had been a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital and retired from Southern Tier Pediatric Associates after several years of dedicated service. After her retirement Mrs. Abbott enjoyed volunteering for The Horseheads Historical Society and The Voter's Registration. Mary Jane enjoyed watching baseball games and was an avid New York Yankee Fan. Mrs. Abbott was pre-deceased by her husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Powell Blazey and William Blazey; sister-in-law, Betty (Mrs. William) Powell; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Stephen Abbott, Peggy and Francis Dombroski, and Bertha Abbott. She loved her family and friends and cherished the time she spent with them especially her grandchildren. Mrs. Abbott is survived by her loving and devoted children Patricia and Donald Diesel of Elmira, NY, Michael and Patricia Mousaw Abbott of Parksville, NY, Thomas Abbott of Horseheads, NY, Joseph Abbott and Brandy Root of Horseheads, NY; former daughter-in-law Peggy Abbott Frisk of Florida; grandchildren Matthew Diesel, Brian Diesel, Aaron (Kate) Abbott, Kevin Abbott, Nicholas Abbott, Eric Abbott, Benjamin Abbott, and Tyler Abbott; great-granddaughter Mia Abbott; brothers and sisters-in-law Thomas (Arlene) Powell of Endwell, NY, William Powell and Dottie of Endwell, NY and Marguerite (Donald) Adams of Endicott, NY; sister-in-law Eleanor Whitney of Elmira, NY; step-mother Betty Jane Powell of Washington; half-brothers and half-sisters Sheila, Steve, Denise, and Mora; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends. The family would like to thank the Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, Appleridge, and The Courtyards at Bethany Village for their wonderful care of Mrs. Abbott. Relatives and friends are invited to call at the Lynch Funeral Home 318 West Broad Street Horseheads, NY on Monday March 26, 2007 at 10 AM. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM at St. Mary Our Mother Church 816 West Broad Street and Westinghouse Road Horseheads, NY. Mrs. Abbott will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Albert in St. Mary Our Mother Cemetery in Horseheads, NY. The family will provide their own flowers and those wishing may remember Mrs. Abbott through memorials to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation, 555 East Market Street Elmira, NY 14901, The Horseheads Historical Society, or The American Cancer Society 1618 College Avenue Elmira, New York 14901.
