Leland C. Blackwood, 82, of Maryville, passed away peacefully at Blount Memorial Hospital on March 14th.

He was born December 22, 1923 in Nashville, TN to the late Herman Oscar and Josie Bellamy Blackwood.

Mr. Blackwood graduated from Montgomery Bell Academy where he was a star athlete. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Flight Instructor. In 1951, Mr. Blackwood graduated from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. He moved to Maryville where he served several years as the District Scout Executive.

Mr. Blackwood then became involved in the insurance business where he spent the rest of his working life. He went on to become the owner of Blackwood Insurance Agency. He also built and designed, with the help of his wife Betty, several apartment complexes in Maryville. He was also part owner of the local newspaper The Maryville Enterprise.

Mr. Blackwood was dedicated to his community, where he served as President of the United Way, member of the board of the Blount County Chapter of the American Red Cross and member of the Maryville Utilities Board. He was a member of New Providence Presbyterian Church where he was an ordained Elder.

Mr. Blackwood was a dedicated family man and loved his family dearly.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Ronald Blackwood and Herman O. Blackwood.

He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Blackwood of Maryville; four children: Judy Stanley, Penny (Sam) Ferguson, Debbie Oliver, and Leland (Lisa) Blackwood, Jr.; ten grandchildren, Stephanie (Jay) Walls, Katie (Mark) Wittling, Stephen Stanley, Randy (Alisha) Stanley, Laurie Ferguson, Julie Ferguson, Carl Oliver, Doug (Vikki) Oliver, Ginger (Fred) Martin and Lanny (Meg) Blackwood; and eight great-grandchildren, Grace Cox, Sarah Walls, Megen Wittling, Max Wittling, Josie Wittling, Savannah Oliver, Alyssa Blackwood, and Jenna Martin.

The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 19th, at McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral Home. A private family burial will be held at Magnolia Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boy Scouts of America, P. O. Box 51885, Knoxville, TN 37950-1885 or to the Alzheimer's Association, Eastern TN Chapter, 2200 Sutherland Avenue, Suite H102, Knoxville, TN 37919.
