OBITUARY:
The old-time friends and neighbors of J. J. Powell were both surprised and shocked to learn of his death, which occurred at Harrison, Nebr. last Wednesday, as it had not been known here that he was failing in health. Mr. Powell had lived near Pawnee City for many years, having come to Pawnee County from Illinois in the year 1884, but about a year ago he and Mrs. Powell went to Harrison to be with their children their, with whom they were living at the time of death.

On the fifth of last September they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the home of their oldest daughter, Mrs. George Gerlach of Harrison. Thirty-eight of the immediate family were present. Mr. Powell was born in Rushville, Ind., December 1, 1852, and died at Harrison, Nebr. January 30, 1929, age 76 years, 1 month and 29 days.

When but a boy he moved with his parents to Illinois. In the year 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Ion Helen Lotts and together they came to Pawnee County, where they made their home. To this union were born 12 children, all of whom, with the exception of one, survive him. Myrtle their first born child, departed this life in the year 1882, at the age of eight years.

The children are: Otto Powell, Humboldt, Mary Cope, Geneva, George Powell, Glenrock, Wyo., Crete Gerlach, Harrison, Tressie Powell, Harrison, Hazel Fowler, Gordon, Gladys Pyle, Pawnee City, Leathy Snethen, Lincoln, Nellie Williamson, Strasburg Colo., William Powell, Harrison, and Mabel Ford, Glenrock.

In the year 1889, Mr. Powell united with the First Episcopal Church of Lewiston, Nebr. and was a faithful member of the Methodist church till the time of his death.

He leaves to mourn his departure besides his faithful wife and family, all of whom were present at the funeral services to pay their last tribute of love and honor to the loving memory of a loving and devoted husband and father, three brother and four sisters, Ida and Elsie Powell, Monmouth, Ill., Emma Mikelson, Monmouth, Ill., George Powell, Dalinda, Ill., Forrest Powell, Chicago, Mrs. O. P. Richardson, Lewiston, Nebr., and James Powell, Crab Orchard, Nebr.; seventeen grand-children and his many friends and neighbors whose hearts go out in sympathy for these in their hour of sorrow.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Pawnee City on Friday afternoon, February 1, the pastor, Rev. w. B. Pardon, officiating, and interment was made in the Pawnee City cemetery.
