Joseph was graduated from the College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, in 1889, and then from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1892. He was ordained to Presbyterian ministry in 1892 by the Presbytery of Wooster. He served as pastor of the Presbyterian congregation in Yorktown, Iowa 1889-1900, and then in Nebraska. But he was back in Iowa because he is known to have been a member of a group of Iowa pastors and lay leaders who worked (successfully) to get the annual national General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to meet in Iowa in 1906.

(The foregoing was gleaned from the book History of the Presbyterian Church in Iowa 1837-1900 by Rev/Dr Joseph Welton Hubbard, 1907.)
