William was the son of William Washington Magruder and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Hilleary Magruder. He died at his home at 103 First Street, Georgetown, D.C. He was buried at the Magruder Family Cemetery with other family members. In the 1960s, he was disinterred with the rest of the family and reburied at Fort Lincoln Cemetery. Cemetery regulations did not allow his gravestone to be moved so his grave has a plain marker.
