Stearns, Junius Brutus, N.A., artist; b. as Lucius Sawyer S., 15 Jun 1810, Monkton, VT, the eldest of seven ch., to Nathan and Mary (Morehouse) S.; d. 17 Sep 1885, as a result of a carriage accident, Brooklyn, NY; m. 2 Apr 1835, Emeline Heath, b. Jun 1815, d. 28 Jul 1881; both bur. Cypress Hills Cem. Brooklyn, NY; ch. Michael Angelo, Raphael Correggio, Junius Brutus, Jr., Sylvester L., and Edith Sylvia (Mrs. James S. Foy). Attended National Academy of Design, NYC. Elected Associate 1848, Academician, 1849. Recording secretary, N.A.D., 1850-1866. A painter of portraits, historical themes, genre, and some landscapes, Stearns' best known works are his series of five paintings of scenes in the life of George Washington depicting the first president as Citizen (his marriage), Farmer (at Mt. Vernon), Soldier (the French and Indian War), Statesman (at the Constitutional Convention), and Christian (his death).
