He was born on May 22, 1963, in Lubbock. He attended Lubbock public schools. He was a military policeman for the U.S. Army, serving in Grenada. He had been employed by the Lubbock Sheriff's Office. He was a singer/songwriter since the age of 6. He played in various bands in Lubbock and, in 1991, he formed the group Centerline.
Survivors include his father, A.M. Tuffy Sams of Garland; three sons, Stephen Sams of Nebraska, Ian W. Sams of Lubbock and Josh Myers of Lubbock; three daughters, Christina Sams of Nebraska, and Summer Sams and Savannah Sams, both of Lubbock; a brother, Nathan Sams of Lubbock; his maternal grandfather, Pete Lang of Lubbock.
