Sara Roxey McKay was born in 1880 in Richland Center, Wisconsin. She was eight years old when her mother died. Sometime after the 1900 Wisconsin Census, Sarah and her older sister, Alice, moved with their father to Los Angeles, California. Sara and Alice are shown living with their father in the 1910 and 1920 Census of Los Angeles. In the 1910 and 1920 Census, he is the proprietor of a grocery store. Sarah is working as secretary for the Board of Trade in 1910, and as a stenographer in a bank in 1920. Her father died in 1927 and her sister, Alice, died in February, 1930. Sara appears in the 1930 Census as the "Head of household." She never married.
