He wed Mary Arvila Cooley in a double wedding with his brother Frank Nelson Monninger and his wife Susie Esther Combs on January 18, 1887 in Banner Township, Dickinson Co., Kansas at the home of his parents.
Jacob and Mary left Kansas about 1921 and settled in California near Glendale. only two of their children stayed in Kansas, Elsie and Howard. The move to California included numerous members of the Monninger family who were cousins, nephews, nieces, sons, and grandchildren.
