He attended Technical Memorial High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was assigned to the European Theater. Retiring in 1982 after more than 35 years, he had worked for Chester Durst Moving Co. He also was a security guard for Kaiser Aluminum and served as a member of the fire police with the Kearsarge Fire Department. A member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 470, he served on its funeral burial detail.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva. W. Steinfurth Gaerttner, in 1998; a son, Raymond George Gaerttner (11 months); five brothers, William, Hugh, Charles, Otto, George Gaerttner; and a sister, Louise "Irene" Yost.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia M. McAdoo and her husband, David, of Erie; three sons, William J. Gaerttner and his wife, Sue, of Puyallup, Wash., Gary Gaerttner and his wife, Bonnie, of Mentor, Ohio, and George Gaerttner and his wife, Charlene, of Erie; five sisters, Mary Colvin, Loretta and Sally Joint, Rose Andrzejczak and Judith Mook; three brothers, Richard, Ross and Donald Gaerttner; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Burial will be private at Erie Cemetery.
