Otho S. Mallonee, 58, day laborer residing on East Vine Street, committed suicide about 4 o'clock Saturday (September 26, 1925) afternoon by drinking a half ounce of carbolic acid, in the presence of his wife, daughter and sister in law.

Mallonee was at the home of his brother in law, Arthur McManus. He drank the liquid from the bottle, took a drink of water and walked a block down the street. He returned in a few minutes and sat down in a chair on the front porch, where he died a short time later. After he left, Mrs. Mallonee picked up the bottle from which he drank the liquid and discovered it was carbolic acid. She called a physician, but her husband died before he arrived.

An inquest was conducted at the Chestnut and Craig Undertaking parlors at 10 o'clock on Sunday morning by Lunetta Danford, coroner of Christian County, a verdict of death due to drinking carbolic acid with suicidal intent being returned. Mrs. Mallonee, William Seddon, Mrs. McManus and Helen Mallonee were witnesses at the inquest and each one said they knew no reason why he should commit suicide.

Mr. Mallonee was the son of Howard and Caroline (VanFossen) Mallonee, born on July 25, 1867 in Guernsey County, Ohio. He married Esther Dora McManus on July 25, 1890 in Wayne County, Illinois.

Two children preceded him in death. Surviving are his widow and eight children. They are: Mrs. Beulah Seddon, Mrs. Maude Gesell, Mrs. Myrtle Reish, Mrs. Mary Mc Ward all of Taylorville; Mrs. Dorothy Mayes of Auburn; and Helen, Otho and Lloyd at home.

The remains were taken to England Street on Sunday afternoon in the home of his daughter Mrs. Gesell, where the funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. Elder William VanHooser of the Latter Day Saints church officiated. Burial was made in Oak Hill Cemetery.
