In 1916, Alma returned to Climax, Minnesota to avoid loss of her U.S. citizenship. She resided with her grandmother until her marriage to Peter.
Janice recalls this about her mother: "Alma was a devout Christian, homemaker, animal lover, game player, artist, baker extraordinaire, outdoor enthusiast, gardener, fisherperson, dancer, crocheter, dynamo, and a lady who loved everyone and who, in return, was loved by birds, stray dogs, friends, cats, stray people, wild animals, and family."
She died at the age of 78 on April 6, 1877, at Pasadena. She is buried at Glendale, California.
