Alma Theresa Evenson was born December 8, 1898 in Norman County, Minnesota, the oldest of eight children of Andrew and Oline Evenson. The family lived at Climax, Minnesota. When Alma was 10 years old, the family moved to another Climax, this time at Saskatchewan, Canada, where the family farmed. This town was just north of the Montana border near the Boundary Plateau area of Saskatchewan and Montana.
In 1916, Alma returned to Climax, Minnesota to avoid loss of her U.S. citizenship. She resided with her grandmother until her marriage to Peter.
Janice recalls this about her mother: "Alma was a devout Christian, homemaker, animal lover, game player, artist, baker extraordinaire, outdoor enthusiast, gardener, fisherperson, dancer, crocheter, dynamo, and a lady who loved everyone and who, in return, was loved by birds, stray dogs, friends, cats, stray people, wild animals, and family."
She died at the age of 78 on April 6, 1877, at Pasadena. She is buried at Glendale, California.
