Son of Charles Crawford and Eunice Jane Evans Durham. Solon married (1) Annie Maria Moody. Solon was listed as single on the 1860 census, he and Annie were likely married in late 1860 or early 1861. Annie died after giving birth to their daughter, Annie Lillian. He married (2) Margaret Ellen Evans on May 12, 1864.

When the Civil War broke out he was elected 1st Lieut. of Roberts Guards, which afterwards, as Company "H", of the 23rd South Carolina Regiment, Evans Brigade, and saw splendid service throughout the war. He rose to rank of Major for gallantry in action, and from the 2nd Manassas battle to Goldsboro, NC he was in active command of his regiment, and fell seriously wounded that kept him from further field duty. He, however, was engaged as conscript and enrolling officer, as Chief of the Division of Marion and afterwards of Charleston, where General Hardee's evacuation he commanded the rear guard."

Camp Main, of Marion, S.C. has lost one of its most active members in the death of Maj. Solon A. Durham, who was Commander from its organization, and who died at his home in Marion on the first day of Aug 1899.
Comrade Durham enlisted in Robert's Guards, Hatch's Battalion, as first lieutenant and was elected captain of Co. H, 23rd S.C. Regiment, Evan's Brigade and was afterwards promoted to the rank of Major for conspicuous gallantry in the service of the Confederacy, receiving a severe wound, which he bore to the grave, at or near Goldsboro, N.C., while gallantly leading his command. He was one of the 'boys in gray' who helped to make the Confederate soldier famous throughout the world for chivalry, endurance and courageous action in times of war and peace.
He was a devoted husband, an indulgent father, a true friend, an honest man.
