Storey county death record: John M. Stephens, buried 13 November 1877. Aged 49, a native of England. Cause of death: pneumonia.

John lived in Gold Hill. In 1870 he is censused as a barkeeper, living in a household with 6 other men. By 1870 he is a saloon keeper, and has a wife, Mary, 38 (born England), and children Mary (8), Richard J. (7), and Louise G. (5), all born Nevada.

His family moved to California some time after his death. They are censused in 1900 living on Clay Steet in San Francisco: Mary (born Dec 1841), emmigrated 1869; Mary (June 1870); Richard (May 1873), Car Conductor; Louise G. (Oct 1874), Compositor.

In 1910 mother Mary, Richard and Louise are still living in San Francisco. Richard is a furniture store porter, and shows married for 6 years; Louise is an Operator for a linotype company. In 1920 the household contains the same people. Richard shows widowed and is now a checking clerk for the railroad. Louise is still a linotype operator.

Mary died 1921 in San Francisco. Her death notice mentions her late husband, John M., and late daughter, Mary Stephens. Her survivors were her children Richard J. and Louise G., and grandchildren Alyce and John Stephens.

By 1930 Louise (as Louise Gordon Stephens) is still working as a linotype operator, living in the Whitcomb Hotel (as a guest). Richard is working as hotel clerk. He has re-married and is living in San Mateo, California, with his wife Honor, 43, born Northern Ireland, a hotel housekeeper. [Their marriage license was issued in Marin county, 5 May 1926, and gives her surname at that time as Cornyn. Her SS record (as Honar) indicates she was born in County Cavan, and Cornyn was her maiden name.]

Richard died 1940 in Alameda county, California. (California death index gives mother's maiden name as Stile.) Louise died 1948. Honor died 1950 in San Joaquin county, California.
