Father of the conductor, Leopold Stokowski (q.v.). The inscription reads: 'In loving memory of my dear husband Kopernik Joseph Stokowski. Born in St. Marylebone Feb. 3rd. 1862, passed away Oct. 10th. 1924. "To know him was to love him. A pure heart, a noble mind." Also of our beloved only daughter Lydia. wife of Capt. Hew Fanshawe, late 17th. Hussars. Passed away in S. Africa, Aug. 11th. 1911, aged 28 years. "Peace, perfect peace."' Leopold Stokowski's entry in "Who's Who" claims that his father was Boleslaw Kopernik Stokowski of Lublin in Poland. However, the Dictionary of National Biography gives the father's occupation as "a cabinet maker of London", which, along with the birthplace mentioned on the gravestone, seems more probable. His wife, who was of Irish parentage, was Annie Marion Moore. In addition to Leopold and Lydia, another son was born in 1890. Both Stokowskis are buried in East Avenue: Leopold on the East side and his father on the West, almost opposite him and a couple of paces further South.
