John was the brother of Raymond Warren Spalding (Raymond had a name change after he discovered that he had always spelled it incorrectly). John was an alcoholic that served two terms in Folsom prison for breaking and entering and grand theft. He also served another term in San Quentin. He died in a one room apartment in El Monte and was found about two days after he died. He was cremated and his brother refused to accept the ashes. They were buried by the county in a pauper's grave.
