COLUMBIA - James Daniel Evans died in the Bryn Mawr Hospital at Philadelphia yesterday afternoon following a lengthy illness.
Born at Florence, Mr. Evans practiced law in Columbia for several years before moving to Philadelphia. At the time of his death, he was president of the Schuylkill Transportation Company and vice president of Merchant and Evans Company of Philadelphia.
Mr. Evans was born December 11, 1876, a son of Dr. James Evans and Marie Antoinette Powell Evans. He attended the public schools at Florence and was graduated from the University of South Carolina law school in 1900. Although he had been away from South Carolina for many years, he maintained a very active interest in the university, especially the law school.
Mr. Evans was twice married, his first marriage being to the former Helen Ravenel of Charleston, who died some years ago. He later married the former Lucy Powell of Baltimore.
Survivors include his widow; one son, James D. Evans, Jr. of Philadelphia; a brother, Thomas Evans of Philadelphia; two sisters, Mrs. Henry C. Riely of Richmond and Mrs. Caleb B. K. Wessed of New Orleans; a nephew, Frank B. Gary of Columbia and numerous other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at Philadelphia. Interment will be at Florence.

He was a member of the Historical Society of Pee Dee, Maxcy Gregg Chapter Sons Confederate Veterans, University and Southern Clan of Philadelphia and author of "The History of Nathaniel Evans of Catfish Creek and His Descendants", 1905.
