UNCLE ROTE ALFORD TAKES to HIMSELF a WIFE

ALFORD - Mr. J. R. Alford, one of Stanford's oldest and best citizens, died about 5 o'clock Tuesday afternoon after a protracted illness of a complication of diseases. The burial took place in Buffalo cemetery Wednesday afternoon after services at the home of Mr. George D. Wearen conducted by Revs. P. J. Ross and Gilbert Glass. Deceased was a warm hearted, good man and the many friends he left sorrow at his taking away. Mr. Alford was born March 11, 1816, near South Fork, Lincoln county, this State. He came to Stanford when a mere youth to serve an apprenticeship with a blacksmith, Mr. Berry, and boarded with him in the same house in which he has lived continuously for 52 years. On July 20, 1837, he was married to Miss Amanda Jane Cox, of Mercer county. They spent their early married life in Washington and Anderson counties, coming to Stanford about 1852 where they spent the remainder of their lives, she having died Aug. 21, 1886. To them were born four children. The oldest and youngest died quite young and Mrs. Geo. D. Wearen is the only survivor, Mr. B. G. Alford having died May 23, of this year. Mr. J. R. Alford ran a livery stable and a blacksmith shop in this town for about 25 years and was also numbered among the old merchants, occupying the room in business where the first bank of Stanford was opened. He was converted some 50 years ago, uniting with the Methodist church. He had eight brothers and one sister, all of whom are now dead. In September, 1887, he was married to Mrs. Lucy E. Beidleman, who died Oct. 1, 1898, since which time he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Wearen. He had seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren living, two great-grandchildren dead. Four generations have lived in the Wearen home the past four years and gathered at the same table.

The May 27, 1904 issue says B. G. Alford, son of J. R. Alford, died in Fayetteville, Tenn. where he was visiting his daughter, Mrs. H. O. Newson. It doesn't say where he was buried. He was 60 years old and also had a son, A. C. Alford.
