Charles R. Oakes passed away in St. Francis Hospital, Beech Grove, IN on February 25, 2012. He was 79 years old. Charles was born in Indianapolis to the late Michael Oakes and Flora (DeBoor) Oakes Welch. He was a US Navy veteran, serving in the Korean War. Charles married Barbara Walton in Indianapolis on October 3, 1954. She preceded him in death on June 24, 2009. Charles raced stock cars at the Speedrome from 1955 -1965. He also loved woodworking and all of his animals. He is survived by his son Charles V.(Sharon) Oakes and his daughter Luinda S. Loutt, his half brother Jimmy Welch, four half sisters; Mary, Marion, Dorothy and Pauline, two grandchildren; Jesse Loutt and Jennifer Hamilton and two great grandchildren; Breyton and Logan Loutt. He was preceded in death by his brother Durbin Oakes and his sister Helen Gerhart. Friends may call on Friday, March 2, 2012 from 4- 8 p.m. in Little and Sons Funeral Home, Beech Grove Chapel. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012 at 11:00 also in the funeral home.
