Teddy was the son of Leopold Reich (former proprietor of Buyer & Reich, importers of fancy goods from Europe) and Amalie Weisskopf Reich. He was educated as a mining engineer, but did not pursue that career. For much of his life, he lived with his mother and maiden aunt, Fanny Weisskopf, at 8 Jordan Avenue, SF. Although he had a long-term relationship, he never married.
