Mary was born on one of the Hairston Plantations in Stokes, North Carolina. She is most noted living at the Hamburg (Home House) Plantation. Prior to living on the Hamburg Plantation with her children, she lived on two other plantations. All records pertaining to Mary list her surname as Hairston. Her father is suspected to be a slave of the Daltons, which was a neighboring slave owning family.
