In the 1870 and 1880 US Census John's family was living in Eminence Township in Logan County, Illinois. We have placed his birth in Logan County as that is the most probable place of his birth. His father Robert Dawes was listed as a farmer.

His parents were Robert Pence 1828-1900 and Margaret E Rayburn 1829-1907.

By the 1900 US Census, the family had moved back to Bourbon County, Kansas. His father was 71 and retired. Later that year after the Census was taken, John's father, Robert, died, and was buried in the local cemetery {Atlanta Cemetery in Atlanta, Logan County, Kansas}.

John William Dawes married Martha Elizabeth Thompson on 25 Sept 1907 in Nevada, Vernon, Missouri.

By the 1920 Census, John was married with 3 living children in the household and he was working for the Post Office as a Money Clerk.
