Jim served most of his naval career in SSBN class submarines. From 1987-1991 he was Commanding Officer of the USS Daniel Webster, SSBN 626. He earned an M.A. in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College in Newport, RI, 1991; an M.A. in International Relations from Salve Regina University, 1992; and an M.S. in Systems Management from USC, 1993. His final military assignment was as Deputy Chief of Staff of Submarine Group Nine at Bangor, WA, where he retired in 1995 after 24 plus years of Naval Service. After his military retirement, Jim went to work for Westinghouse, in their Nuclear Services Business Unit, where he held various engineering and management positions, including assignments at numerous commercial nuclear sites across the United States. From 2002 until 2006 he was Resident Site Manager at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Plant in California. Most recently he was the Technology Integration Manager for Westinghouse in Richland, Washington. Captain Maris is survived by his wife Jennis, to whom he was married for over 28 years, and who resides at their home in Bremerton, WA; his father Lt. William L. Maris, USN (Ret) of Bellingham, WA; brother Bill Maris and wife Kit of Anacortes, WA; sister Celeste Maris and husband John O’Conner of Olympia, WA; as well as nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Jim’s mother, Marie Maris preceded him in death in June 2001. Jim also leaves behind many cherished shipmates, co-workers, and friends from his years in the military and with Westinghouse. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Anacortes, WA. Interment will follow at Mount Vernon Cemetery in Mount Vernon, WA, at the Maris family plot where Jim’s mother and his great-grandparents William S. and Margaret Maris are buried. Memorial donations may be made to the Kitsap Humane Society or Catholic Community Services.
